LRW's Interview with MOY Erica Sander
League of Railway Women (LRW): How were you introduced to the rail industry?
Erica Sander (ES): I was first introduced to the rail industry by a friend that brokered rail car leasing. About the same time, I came across a job posting for Trinity Industries / TrinityRail where I worked in the Public Affairs department.

LRW: What was your first encounter with LRW?
ES: I met Amy Homan with Iowa Northern when I was in Iowa on business. She told me about LRW and encouraged me to check it out and join. I was excited to learn more about LRW and the industry.

LRW: Your career path has taken you in a new direction, what will you miss the most about the rail industry?
ES: I will miss my co-workers, industry peers, and of course the LRW leadership and members. The rail industry is a critical and foundational backbone to moving all goods throughout North America. It is an industry deep rooted in pride and history as well as excitement as it continues to evolve and innovate safe, clean, and efficient transportation. There is camaraderie and respect within the industry between the old and new generation of railroaders that I will miss.

LRW: You have been with your new company for over a year but continued your position on the LRW Executive Board until recently. What drove you to carry on as Secretary when you didn't have to?
ES: I take great pride working leaders and members of an organization such as LRW as well as the rail industry. The board worked through challenges that were presented during COVID and found ways to continue to connect and grow the organization. There were many transitions, changes, and improvements all happening at once including leadership, association management, by-laws, and others. I wanted to be a part of this exciting time with these great ladies and see my commitment through until the team was all set for the next elections. I really enjoyed working with these women and LRW so it was easy for me to stay.

LRW: When the rare opportunity presents itself, and you have time to yourself, what do you enjoy doing the most?
ES: I love spending time with my family and friends. My hobbies are taking my two kids to their hobbies. I recently started playing tennis which I really enjoying learning.

“The member of the year award helps us showcase the talents and efforts of our greatest champions,” said Lisa Tackach, LRW Vice President and Outgoing Awards Chair. “Erica joins a diverse register of members whose support and dedication have contributed to LRW's mission of connecting and cultivating women in rail since 1998.”

The 2023 nomination form will be available on the LRW website, www.railwaywomen.org/member-of-the-year this spring.
