League of Railway Women Awards 2019 Scholarship to Association of American Railroads' Genevieve Carnes

Washington, DC, September 30, 2019 – Genevieve Carnes, Railway Alert Network Manager for the Association of American Railroads (AAR) in Washington, DC, has been named the winner of the 2019 Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship by the League of Railway Women (LRW).Washington, DC, September 30, 2019 – Genevieve Carnes, Railway Alert Network Manager for the Association of American Railroads (AAR) in Washington, DC, has been named the winner of the 2019 Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship by the League of Railway Women (LRW).
The scholarship winner was announced by the LRW at its annual conference in Minneapolis, MN, as part of Railway Interchange 2019. The scholarship was created in 2014 by the LRW to honor the memory of Connie Sumara, a founding member and former president.
Following service in the U.S. Air Force and support to the Department of Defense missions for well over an additional eight years, Genevieve Carnes transitioned to the rail industry. For the past four years, Genevieve has served on the security team in the Safety and Operations department at the AAR, as the Railway Alert Network Manager, supporting the Class I freight and passenger railroads throughout North America.
She has a Bachelor's of Arts in International Relations from the American Military University, and has earned a cybersecurity certification from Georgetown University, where she is currently enrolled in a master's program focusing on technology management. Genevieve and her husband of sixteen years, have two children.
In accepting the scholarship, Genevieve, said, “To women who continually balance their railroad careers, families and school all at once, I am honored to call you my colleagues.” She is proud to show her children and all young professionals that, “We can attain excellence in all aspects of life – that mountains are meant to be climbed.”
Lori Kennedy, Director of Regulatory Affairs for CP, works with Genevieve on AAR's Railway Security Working Committee. In recommending her for the scholarship, Lori said, “Genevieve has an optimistic outlook and strives for improvement not only in herself, but to help those around her.”
The LRW awards the annual Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship to a qualified student from the rail industry who is pursuing post-secondary studies.
