LRIW Awards Three $3000 Scholarships

Washington, DC, August 13, 2015 – The League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW) has announced its scholarship committee has selected three students to receive scholarships for the 2015/2016 academic year. This year, each student was awarded $3,000.

Washington, DC, August 13, 2015 – The League of Railway Industry Women (LRIW) has announced its scholarship committee has selected three students to receive scholarships for the 2015/2016 academic year. This year, each student was awarded $3,000.

“Once again, the LRIW Scholarship Committee received applications from an outstanding group of students,” said Kathy Keeney, LRIW Scholarship Chair. “We are happy to be able to contribute to their educational pursuits.”

The LRIW Annual Scholarship Program awards scholarships to qualified students from around the rail industry who are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. LRIW recognizes the importance of education and is proud to offer financial assistance to students working to achieve their academic goals. In 2014, LRIW also awarded its first Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship to honor former LRIW President Connie Sumara.

The scholarship winners for 2015/16 school year are:
  • Connor Bailey – Connor is the son of John Bailey from longtime LRIW corporate member, TTX. Connor will be a senior this fall at the University of Illinois and is majoring in materials science and engineering with a concentration in electronic materials and a minor in physics.
  • Benjamin Dobies – Ben is the son of Steve Dobies from longtime LRIW corporate member, A. Stucki Company. Ben will be a senior this fall at the University of Pittsburgh and is majoring in mechanical engineering.
  • Laura Steckbeck – Laura is the daughter of LRIW member, Carol Steckbeck, who is a communications/PR specialist. Carol, a former executive with the Association of American Railroads, has done some work recently for the LRIW and works with the RSI on Railway Interchange and other projects. Laura will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Oklahoma and is majoring in communications.
