LRW's Inaugural Learning Webinar on Freight Rail and the U.S. Economy Draws over 100 Viewers

On Wednesday, November 27, 2018, the League of Railway Women (LRW) hosted its first in a series of "Railroading 101" learning webinars. The webinar was moderated by LRW board member, Kari Gonzales, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Transportation Technology Center, Inc. 

On Wednesday, November 27, 2018, the League of Railway Women (LRW) hosted its first in a series of "Railroading 101" learning webinars. The webinar was moderated by LRW board member, Kari Gonzales, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Transportation Technology Center, Inc. 

The webinar speaker was Luisa Fernandez-Willey, Senior Economist at the Association of American Railroads and LRW Membership Chair, the broadcast titled “An Overview of the U.S. Freight Railroads & U.S. Economy” provided an overview of U.S. freight rail, current trends in rail traffic and the U.S. economy. 

“LRW conducted a membership survey in 2017 and our members told us that education was a top priority. The over 100 viewers helped to underscore this interest, “said Gonzales. “We look forward to hosting more webinars on a variety of topics to help our members learn more about our industry.”

Topics covered in the webinar included: 
  • Rail traffic updates and railroad infrastructure and equipment investments,
  • The economic impact of operations and investments by Class 1 freight railroads (jobs, economic output, wage, and tax revenue),
  • The role of freight railroads in international trade and the commodities exported and imported by rail,
  • How tariffs, trade disputes, and disasters can affect rail traffic and the U.S.  economy,
  • Key U.S. economic indicators such as GDP growth, manufacturing output, and job growth,
  • A look at what's ahead for the U.S. economy.
